Welcome to my blog!
Dearest Reader,
After a long writing journey, I finally finished what can be considered a second draft of a memoir. It’s about an experience I had with cancer in the 1980’s. Back then, I lived in Venezuela, and was an adolescent.
While I was editing the manuscript, I eliminated one whole chapter – the last one. In this part of the book I had written about my lessons learned during those trying years. However, after reading those pages over a few times, and getting the opinions of a few people, I agreed that it sounded ‘self-help-ish.’ That’s not the intent of the memoir. Hence, I took it out altogether.
Although I still like what I wrote, I realized that it might have more value if I explained how those lessons have helped me. I understood that every single experience with cancer is unique and non-transferable. It’s a journey that doesn’t need to be trudged alone, but the impact of the experience in its multiple varieties, is in fact very personal.
Because of all this, and because some readers would prefer not to read a whole book, I decided to write about my after-cancer life lessons on a blog. Yes, this will be public (yikes!) And yes, my private inner-girl is feeling very vulnerable. But it’s the least I can do to help our world find cures, figure out prevention techniques, or discover new ways to cope with this disease. After all, I’ve lived almost 30 good years, in full remission, and cancer-free.
My intention is to write about life beyond cancer remission from this point forward. This is mostly because the lessons I’ve learned have been about love, happiness, resilience, and faith. The past is now immortalized through the lines of the memoir. The present, is the fuel that feeds the new chapters of my life.
I hope you enjoy my blog, and if you’d like to share stories of hope, miracles, and inspiration, please comment on the lines below. I’d love to hear from you!
Warm regards,
M. Patricia Diaz
